About
Maria Varelas is a Professor of Science Education studying possibilities and challenges related to student learning when teachers consider and practice science education in urban schools aiming at equity and social justice. With multi-year and multi-collaborator grants totaling over $9 million, she has been working towards changing the master narrative of how students of color in urban schools engage with science and what understandings they could help generate for science education practice and research. She has published a book, an edited volume, and over 60 articles and chapters, and has been teaching undergraduate and graduate students for over 25 years. Varelas is leading CIM²AS research on science education and facilitating conversations among teachers and instructors about pedagogy and curriculum.
